Dive Into Adventure at New Jersey’s Premier Aquarium

Nestled along the scenic Delaware River, just across from Philadelphia, Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey, is one of the best family-friendly attractions in the region. Whether you're visiting the Greater Philadelphia area or a local family, this aquarium is a must-see. For locals, I highly recommend considering a membership—you'll want to return time and time again.

What to See and Do

Adventure Aquarium offers a rich variety of sea life, featuring both exotic and regional species. Here's what you can expect:

  • Touch Tanks: Get up close and personal with marine life at multiple touch tanks.

  • Interactive Play Areas: Let the kids burn off energy in both indoor and outdoor play zones.

  • 3D Movie Theater: Included with your admission, this theater offers an immersive experience for all ages.

Must-Do Experiences:

  • Feed the Stingrays: For a small fee, purchase a tray of fish and experience the thrill of hand-feeding stingrays. Be sure to check the schedule upon arrival and plan to be there a few minutes early as they do limit the number of the trays they sell per feeding.

  • Hippo Habitat: A unique feature you won't find in many aquariums, Adventure Aquarium is home to two resident hippos, Genny and Button. Fun fact for my fellow Disney fans: Genny was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! To catch them at their most active, visit during feeding times—it's a highlight you won’t want to miss.

  • Shark Bridge: Adventure-seekers, this one’s for you! Walk across the world’s longest V-shaped suspension bridge, suspended just inches above a tank filled with three different species of sharks. While there’s no height or age requirement, everyone must cross the cargonet bridge unassisted. If you have younger children, consider having one adult lead and another follow to ensure everyone keeps moving.

Getting There

While Camden might not have the best reputation, the area around the aquarium feels safe and is easily accessible. Follow map directions, and you’ll be in and out of the city with ease.

Food and Drink

The on-site cafeteria has limited appeal, so I recommend bringing your own snacks and drinks. You can enjoy your meal at the outdoor picnic tables overlooking the river or on one of the many benches throughout the aquarium. We avoid the cafeteria seating, as it can be quite chaotic and loud.

What to Bring

  • Strollers: The aquarium is stroller-friendly, making it easy to bring along for storage of coats, food, and drinks. However, if you don’t need it for storage, you might prefer to leave it in the car, as the aquarium is very walkable. Note: Wagons and wagon-style strollers are prohibited.

  • Snacks and Drinks: Pack a lunch, water bottles, and snacks, especially if you plan to spend the entire day.

Admission Tips

  • Buy Tickets in Advance: Purchase your tickets through the aquarium’s website to reserve your entrance time and avoid long lines.

  • Special Offers: Check the website for current discounts or special offers.

  • Library Passes: New Jersey residents should check with their local library for free passes that can be checked out.

  • Pre-K Pass Program: If you have children ages 2-5, register them for the FREE Pre-K Pass Program, which generally runs from late August through mid/late October. You'll need to visit the aquarium before the end of October to activate the pass.

Membership

If you’re local or plan to visit more than twice, a membership may be the most cost-effective option. Memberships come with various benefits, including discounted or free parking, and discounts at affiliated attractions nationwide, like Dollywood and Silver Dollar City. Plus, families with children enrolled in the Pre-K Pass Program receive 10% off memberships.

Bonus Tip

If you are staying overnight, don’t miss the Battleship New Jersey, located just south of the aquarium along the Delaware River. Stay tuned for our full review of this fascinating attraction!
